Distinguished and Famous people from Gundagai
🌟 Yarri and Jackey
Wiradjuri men Yarri and Jackey repeatedly entered the floodwaters at Gundagai in June 1852 to rescue people trapped in trees. Yarri used a bark canoe and Jackey a rowboat, drawing on knowledge and skills that became vital as buildings were swept away. The National Museum records that four Aboriginal men assisted, although only these two are known by name. Their courage was acknowledged belatedly, and a bronze memorial was unveiled in 2017. Their story belongs at the centre of Gundagai’s history of the disaster.
